Abstract:Recent computerized methods for automating the location and design of transportation routes, such as highways, railways and urban rail transit systems can greatly reduce the labor required, account for additional factors and provide better solutions than those from experienced human designers. These methods can also benefit from and process massive amounts of data from recent geographic information systems (GIS). Such methods will be presented for evaluating and optimizing the alignments of highways and rail transit systems, including problems related to intersections and interchanges, bridges and tunnels, constrained modifications of existing alignments, stations along rail transit lines and extensions to small network design. The discussion will include possible objectives and constraints, costs and benefits, various other quantifiable impacts, solution methods and possible directions for future research.
