Dr David Chua Kim Huat is currently a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore. He is department deputy head, director for Faculty of Engineering Development. He is also the Appointed Convenor of Singapore National Committee and the gainer of National Day Honour. His research interests have been in lean construction, computer integrated and IT-based construction management, BIM, construction simulation and construction safety.
Abstract
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is considered as one technology that will dramatically improve productivity in the AEC industry. It is not only a platform for collaboration during design and construction; it has the potential to transform the way project is constructed through Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). New developments in this perspective will be presented. The presentation will also include recent research work of the research group led by Professor David Chua. These works exploit the use of embedded intelligence and construction knowledge in BIM to enhance decision making and optimize project objectives. They cover the project life cycle from intelligent design, digital construction planning, lean virtual design and construction, and smart project control.
